    What is close reading?

    This process of deep study is called close reading. It is an important skill that children should learn to practice form an early age. Close reading is different from Guided reading. For close reading, kids are supposed to read a short text and dive deeply into the meaning of the text. They are supposed to carefully analyse each sentence to comprehend the meaning of the text at hand. This reading allows the student to generate their own meaning and come to a conclusion. Close Reading can be surely compared to judging a person from inside out by diving deep into his or her character. The method of learning always informs us of the minor details of the given text. However, it reveals its importance with its name as it helps the students to be more specific and comprehensive to a chosen text.

    Features of Close Reading: 

    1. There must be a deep understanding of the text. The students should not only read the most apparent meaning of the text, but they must also learn to evaluate the matter of the text. They should delve deep in the character study of the text. 
    2. The size of the text must be smaller. One simply cannot concentrate on a larger text for long. So for close reading, the size of the text should be kept rather small. For children who are yet to be in high school, close reading can be proven to be quite challenging. A maximum of three to six paragraphs is given to comprehend. 
    3. The students must not be given any prior information about the text; they need to comprehend the text thoroughly and get the maximum information about it. If they are fed information beforehand then they would construct a mental image of the content. It will be difficult for them to draw their own conclusions. 
    4. Unlike guided reading, close reading focuses on the core meaning of the text so that the learners can get maximum information about the minute details of a text and can feel a closer connection for the subject.

    The goal of reading is to make the learner self-sufficient. He should be able to form questions for himself and answer them promptly. The goal is to let those curious little minds to think critically. If children are not learnt to think critically they will not be able to comprehend the complexities of the texts of higher classes. Children who are new to the method of close reading should learn to be patient as it might seem harder for some. But we must overcome our drawbacks and learn better.
