Myopia Control is Possible Today

Myopia Control
Image Source: | The Process To Control Myopia | The various treatment options available in the treatment of nearsightedness are devised as Myopia Control.  The theme has included the different measures that are prescribed by an optometrist or an ophthalmologist.

Primarily, there are four categories of treatments are offered for controlling Myopia. These can be summed up as follows:

  • Atropine eye drops
  • multifocal contact lenses
  • multifocal eyeglasses
  • Orthokeratology

Myopia Control is important as it helps in the reduction of risks of the complications that offer a threat to vision. These complications might give rise to a higher level of myopia that includes:

  • Glaucoma
  • Cataract
  • Retinal detachments
  • Blindness

Atropine Eye Drops

These drops are mostly used for reduction in pain associated with certain types of eye inflammation. These drops also help in getting relieved upon fatigue occurred by dilating the pupil. This temporarily limits the ability of the eye to change focus, called accommodation.  The effect of atropine over the accommodation can be similarly explained with the effect it produces while used in Myopia Control. Studies have also revealed that Atropine is the most effective medium for restraining Myopia.

Multifocal Contact Lenses

These lenses were primarily designed to provide a clear vision for people who have refractive errors. These include nearsightedness, farsightedness, or astigmatism. People who are experiencing the normal age-related loss of near focusing ability called presbyopia could find the solution in these lenses. Later, the multifocal lenses were effectively used in Myopia Control. This effectiveness was seen in those children who wore multifocal lenses on a daily basis from a basic thought that these lenses might solve their near-sight issues. There were 50 percent effective Myopia Control for these children with respect to putting restraint over their myopia when compared with similarly nearsighted children who were habituated to wear regular soft contacts for the same period.

Multifocal Eyeglasses

The multifocal eyeglass lenses help people with presbyopia. Wearing these glasses help people see at distances. These lenses have also been implemented successfully in the Myopia Control. The studies have revealed the fact that the use of multifocal eyeglasses in Myopia Control could not produce the desired effect. Rather, the effect has shown slow but steady progress. In a three-year study over a group of Chinese-Canadian children who were suffering from progressive myopia have shown a sustained effect. It showed that the use of multifocal eyeglasses could produce progressive control over Myopia and the success rate was above 51 percent. This comparison was made with corresponding children who were habituated to wear regular eyeglasses for myopia correction.

This symptom is more commonly known as ‘corneal reshaping lenses.’ These are special types of contact lenses that are specifically designed permeable contacts. These lenses are worn only at night while sleeping. The lenses are taken off in the morning. It was observed that the temporary correction is good enough for Myopia Control. Therefore, no corrective lenses were needed during the daytime. Another study with near-sighted Chinese children over the age limit of 6 to 10 years has observed that the application of Ortho-K contact lenses has made an effective reduction of eyeball lengthening. This is a key factor in Myopia progression. The effective reduction was about 43 percent in comparison with other children who used to wear regular eyeglasses for an effective Myopia Control. The study is continued for a period of two years and the data have been collected as a synopsis of that period only. You have to understand that myopia treatment is important and must be started as suggested by the doctor.
